Balenciaga Blanket Bag XL in Orange | Spring/Summer 2017 Campaign Piece
The Bag That Turned a Household Object Into a Luxury Icon
This is the Balenciaga Blanket Bag in its largest XL size, from the Spring/Summer 2017 collection, one of Demna Gvasalia's most talked-about (and most controversial) accessory designs. Featured in the SS17 campaign, the Blanket Bag took its inspiration directly from the quilted, floral-printed blankets found in bags at markets and airports around the world, reimagined entirely in lambskin leather and sold as a luxury statement piece.
This particular bag comes in a bold orange floral colorway, a warm, richly patterned print rendered in soft, wrinkled leather that mimics the texture of fabric rather than traditional hide. Oversized coiled top handles and a large, boxy silhouette make it as much a sculptural object as it is a functional bag, easily fitting an overnight's worth of belongings.
The Blanket Bag arrived as a follow-up to Gvasalia's earlier Bazar Shopper Tote, which had reimagined the plastic-and-nylon shopping totes commonly used by market vendors. With the Blanket Bag, Gvasalia pushed that same idea further: elevating an everyday, unglamorous object, the blanket carrier used by travelers worldwide, into a four-figure luxury item. The bag drew immediate attention (and no shortage of internet debate) for its resemblance to the exact kind of quilted floral bags used to transport blankets and linens, with commentators noting how closely it echoed household goods long associated with immigrant and working-class communities across Asia and the Middle East. Whatever side of that conversation you landed on, there's no denying the Blanket Bag became one of the definitive, most-discussed accessories of Gvasalia's early Balenciaga era.
The Blanket Bag made its debut on Balenciaga's Spring/Summer 2017 runway itself, appearing in the XL "Arena" leather silhouette carried in look 25, styled there in a peach, brown, and floral striped colorway against the season's signature riot of vivid, clashing prints, vibrant floral trousers and matching pieces that defined the show's maximalist mood. Runway reviews at the time specifically singled out the bag as one of two new oversized accessory shapes introduced that season, alongside a rounder, pouf-inspired style, marking a clear departure from the brand's previous striped market-tote silhouette. This orange floral XL piece follows that same Arena leather construction and oversized scale, in one of the collection's other standout colorways.
Styling Tips
The Blanket Bag is designed to be the focal point of any look, let it do the talking. Pair it with simple, monochrome outfits so the print and volume take center stage, the way it was styled in the original SS17 campaign against a bold red backdrop. It also works well as a statement travel bag, since the size comfortably fits overnight essentials.
