Balenciaga Spring/Summer 2019 "Neo-Tailoring" Suit
A Defining Moment in Modern Tailoring
This is a rare, runway-worn Balenciaga suit from the Spring/Summer 2019 collection, the collection where creative director Demna Gvasalia introduced what he called "Neo-Tailoring," a complete rethink of the men's suit for a new generation of Balenciaga wearers. Rather than following the codes of classical menswear, Gvasalia stripped the suit down to its most comfortable, wearable form, removing the structure and formality that usually come with a jacket.
In interviews following the show, Gvasalia explained that the goal was to make tailoring feel effortless rather than restrictive. The shoulders are left unpadded and free of epaulettes, giving the jacket a soft, relaxed line instead of the stiff, built-up silhouette associated with traditional suiting. The jacket itself was designed to replace the shirt entirely, eliminating one more layer, and one more rule, from the classic tailored look. The result is a suit that reads as modern streetwear-influenced tailoring: oversized, fluid, and easy to wear, while still unmistakably a suit.
Because this suit was built to break the rules of classic tailoring, it styles best when you lean into that ease rather than fight it. Skip the traditional dress shirt underneath, the jacket is designed to stand on its own. Pair with chunky sneakers or minimal leather boots for a look that stays true to Gvasalia-era Balenciaga, or dress it down further with a simple tee for an off-duty, archive-fashion feel.
